I found a lot of interesting parts in Lewis essay The Geographical Review. Landscaping is using your eyes and incorporating vocabulary to describe what you see. I found the whole idea about landscape interesting. It is different from the technique i was being taught in school. I really believe that would have made school more interesting or made important information stick to minds easily.
What is the value of the built landscape around us? Lewis explains that landscape is an older world "the parent of the world they inhabit." In order to open there eyes and also there minds start out in the surrounding everyday landscape. Taking baby steps in order to move on to bigger things. Surrounding landscape in the city you live in has history to. Everything around you has a value but you will never know until asking questions and using your eyes.
Two precepts Lewis says that an individual needs in order to "read" the landscape?
First precept is, "Students need to develop and cultivate the habit of using their eyes and asking nonjudgmental questions about familiar, commonplace things." Meaning, trust what you see and ask nonjudgmental question. Like What?, When?, Why?. Rather than making fast judgments of what you like and dislike, Get know the landscape first before establishing your thoughts. Pay attention to common places that might not seem interesting. Second precept is,"Students are going to look at elements of landscape and describe them, they need to acquire a vocabulary that allows them to describe things accurately." Vocabulary is important because with the correct words used to describe something you are able to ask questions. Using simple words cant describe anything complicating and descriptive vocabulary helps to see similarities and differences in landscapes.
